Community Need
The southeast region of Colorado Springs has long been identified as an area of opportunity as most residents live well below the poverty rate, crime is high, and the unemployment rate is typically “two to three times that of the rest of the city” (Rodgers, The Gazette; Updated Jun 16, 2023). Educational attainment is also in stark contrast to surrounding areas with 15.2% of residents aged 25+ lacking a high school diploma (Colorado Equity Compass) compared to an estimated 6% of all Colorado Springs residents (US Census Bureau, 2022). The most recent data estimates 84% of our residents have low access to fresh food and lack access to health care, suffering some of Colorado’s highest rates of poor physical health (Rodgers, 2019). These factors underscore the significant need for the programs offered by The Caleb Approach and highlight the importance of personal empowerment and community sustainability programs.
